Dynamite was patented in the US and the UK and was used extensively in mining and the building of transport networks internationally. A Nitroglycerin Hill at Ardeer The great dynamite factory at Ardeer in Scotland, the largest of its kind, is one of the most picturesque places in the world. Considering the unique and dramatic conditions that prevail among its workers, the neglect of Ardeer hitherto by novelists and dramatists is sur­prising. In 1864 Nobel founded Nitroglycerin Aktiebolaget AB in Sweden. It was a joint-stock company with a fairly small amount of capital, paid in mostly by a Stockholm merchant. For his patents Nobel received 49.6 percent of the shares in the company, besides a cash payment.

Nobel established a dynamite factory at Ardeer in Ayrshire, which, by 1907 by was reputed to be the largest explosives factory in the world and which closed only relatively recently. The required kieselguhr was found in substantial deposits in Scotland at Loch Cuithir on the Isle of Skye and in Aberdeenshire.

He came to Britain to canvass support among businessmen who might back his plans to establish a factory.
